More Stars Join the Movement

This week has seen a number of new developments. In addition to the partial injunction of SB 1070, Michael Moore came out in support of moving the All-Star Game, Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas put out a new video, and a growing list of musicians have signed on to the Sound Strike campaign — including Kanye West, Rage Against the Machine, Juanes, and others.

When asked by Larry King if he thought the All Star Game should be moved, Moore had this to say:

“That’s correct. I think it should not be played there. And I know a number of baseball players are going to boycott it, and I support that boycott.”

Protests (like this one in Seattle) are picking up steam across the country.  So when will MLB Commissioner Bud Selig step up to the plate?  He has a chance to keep baseball on the right side of history.  Call his Milwaukee office and tell him what you think: (414) 225-8900.

WATCH: All-Star Game Confrontation

On Monday, we showed up at the All-Star Game with more than 100,000 petitions for Commissioner Bud Selig. Selig chose to hide, but the media took notice, including the AP, USA Today, and numerous other outlets.

On the same day, prominent Latino ballplayers like Albert Pujols spoke out against SB 1070, and others like All-Star Jose Valverde are even pledging to boycott the 2011 All-Star Game.

We’re not going to stop until Bud Selig does the right thing. That’s why we’re planning ongoing actions over the next two weeks to keep the heat on Selig and the baseball owners he works for.

Our strength is in our numbers. Please check out the video from the All-Star Game petition delivery, then pass it on to your friends and family and help us get to 150,000 signatures!

More players come out against SB 1070, pledge to Boycott 2011 All-Star Game

The list of players against SB 1070 is growing.  In addition to Albert Pujols and Miguel Batista, Marlins Manager Edwin Rodriguez came out against the law yesterday.  And three players have so far pledged to boycott the game altogether: José Valverde, Yovani Gallardo, and Joakim Soria.

Check out some of the coverage from this week:

All-Star Boycott Coming? Baseball Players Lash Out at Arizona Immigration Law
CBS News, July 13, 2010
With the All-Star Game set for tonight in Anaheim, opponents of Arizona’s controversial immigration law are spotlighting comments from Major League Baseball players opposing the law – including some who says they would boycott next year’s All Star game in Phoenix over the legislation. “I’m opposed to it. How are you going to tell me that, me being Hispanic, if you stop me and I don’t have my ID, you’re going to arrest me? That can’t be,” St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols told USA Today.

USA TODAY: ‘Major League Baseball should boycott Arizona’

Major League Baseball should boycott Arizona
USA TODAY, June 25, 2010, Commentary by Raul Reyes

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announced last week that Kansas City will be the site of the 2012 All-Star Game. Folks there will no doubt applaud. After all, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star estimates that the game will bring in $70 million for the city. However, Selig could have made a much more significant announcement: that he is moving the 2011 All-Star Game out of Phoenix.

Since Arizona passed its restrictive immigration law, Latinos have been outraged by what many of us see as an attack on our civil rights. After all, it seems that racial profiling will be inevitable. So we’re reacting with our wallets, and a boycott is under way. Yet though The Arizona Republic estimates that the state could lose as much as $90 million in canceled conventions, the boycott lacks momentum.

If baseball were to move its All-Star Game, the message would be loud and clear: This law can’t stand. Unfortunately, Selig is resisting calls to do so, and told the Associated Press as much: “Apparently, all of the people around and in minority
